Although shocking in his out-of-the-box comments, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butler is a disquieting reminder of how societal norms have changed, maybe not in the Life Gets Better movement. While his comments in a personal setting would be an acceptable reflection of his own beliefs, directing college students to an out-of-step marital relationship status for women is strange at the least and purposely provocative.
My father and mother, born in 1911 and 1916, both insisted that women should be economically independent, particularly in a marital relationship. They firmly believed this affords women an equal and safe footing in marriage.
My life was spent pursuing higher education degrees and achieving substantial professional success. My parents lived to see my adult life. I also had three children, all of whom, as adults, are successful. Women, mothers, and wives must make choices that will enhance their lives, including their marriages.
