Retirement Bliss: Adapting to Life in the Desert

Living in the desert brings many challenges, some too stressful, while life is getting better (hahaha). The heat in the summer is 100-124 degrees. This summer, the average has been about 109, easier to manage. We do outside activities in the early AM and run errands. Midday is time for paperwork, reading, puzzles, writing, online courses, and quilting. Late afternoon is for swimming every day in our pool. Dinner is early evening, after 5 o’clock cocktails.

Before I retired, I would never have imagined this type of daily routine. I worked many hours each day and never imagined what post-work life would be like. For the years after retirement, traveling around the world and throughout the US was my main goal. I have many travel logs from then and plan to transcribe them at some point. COVID put a halt to the pace of travel for two years, and then it was hard to get back into the travel groove. Smaller trips are the main destination now, as well as trips back to the East Coast to visit family.

The peaceful pace of my daily activities is perfect for this point in my aging. I enjoy the calmness and the choice to be busy when and how I choose.
