In the last three years, I have been so fortunate to have developed a friendship with a neighbor who qualifies as a “super ager,” which is a specific category for the aging population. She is 99 1/2 years young and has the cognitive functioning of a person in their 50s.
“Super agers” is a term used in neuroscience and aging research to describe people who are in their 70s, 80s, or even older, yet maintain memory and cognitive abilities comparable to people decades younger. While there is no single lifestyle formula, research indicates that there are certain patterns:
- Strong social connections (deep, meaningful relationships rather than many acquaintances).
- Active engagement in challenging activities (learning, problem-solving, arts, music, or complex work).
- Physical activity (regular exercise, especially aerobic activity).
- Positive outlook and resilience (better coping with stress and setbacks).
- Lifelong curiosity and openness to new experiences.
My neighbor still goes to the gym every day and participates in as many activities as possible. She goes out to lunch with her fellow gym rats at least three times a week. She comes to dinner with me every Wednesday and insists we go to a new restaurant each week. She has retained a positive outlook on life even though she has outlived three husbands and lost two sons. Her granddaughters are in their 50s, as well as her nieces.
I am so fortunate to have her as a bestie!
