Unless you are from California, do you know what is the Salton Sea? I signed up for a two day workshop and today was Day 1. I spent most of the day listening to government agency representatives and agency contacts. Mostly, it was tedious and repetitive. These speakers did not discuss the serious causes of the Salton Sea’s pollution. The speakers were ducking behind laws and several state regulations from California, Arizona, and Colorado. The backwash from agricultural water use seemed like a convenient but weak explanation. In addition, the drought in this area compounded pollution levels by concentrating pollutants in the water. The main worry is the polluted dust blowing across the desert and making residents sick now or over the years. The Salton Sea’s water level has declined significantly in recent years. Since the pollution comes with the increasing dust, it is not possible to avoid exposure.
